Becky James has a knack for blending the cute and the macabre, and while she definitely has films that are more polished than 2007’s Snake, none of them are quite as… visceral. Snake is drawn about as simply as possible, like a notebook doodle brought to life. But the crude style doesn’t take away from the story; it probably makes it more accessible, since the teeth-pulling in particular would’ve been a lot more squirm-inducing if it’d been rendered realistically. Besides, animation isn’t about the quality of the drawing as much as the quality of the ideas, and Snake nails it on that front.
