Seven-Day *Remote* Animation Challenge!!

Production event: Wednesday May 20th – Tuesday May 26th, 2020 (7 days total)
Held off-site, with online support directly from QAS HQ

Screening: Saturday June 6, 2020, 7pm, ONLINE on Zoom and other streaming sites.

For the past 12 years, intrepid teams of animators would spend their May long weekend locked in the Quickdraw Animation Society studios, making brand-new animated films during our annual ANIMATION LOCKDOWN production event! Participants would enter the studios on Friday night, work shoulder-to-shoulder with their fellow artists all weekend, and leave Monday afternoon having created something incredible.

We find ourselves in 2020 stuck in a very different kind of Lockdown. The world is closed. The QAS studios are shut down, at least temporarily. Gatherings of all kinds are banned. It’s a real drag.

But don’t despair! Do you hear that sound? That pull beyond the horizon? The itch in the soles of your feet? That, my friend, is the CALL TO ADVENTURE! The theme for this year’s *remote* edition of the Animation Lockdown!

Yes, we’re still doing it! It’s gonna be different. It’s gonna be online. It’s gonna be weird, and awkward, and take a lot longer. But that’s no excuse. The gauntlet has been thrown. The summons has been sent. Adventure waits for no rat. We’re leaving for destinations unknown. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!

The Logistics

For this year’s Animation Lockdown, animators will work from home (or their safe, quarantined location of choice). Use your own gear, or take advantage of Quickdraw’s equipment and software library to make your mini-masterpiece.

Because of the challenges of working from home, we’re also stretching the event from four days up to a full week. Starting on May 20, you’ll have seven days to answer the animated call to adventure.

The Challenge

To be eligible for our jury and audience prizes, animators will have to incorporate this year’s theme (“Call to Adventure”), plus a secret camera technique and editing technique, and a clip of local music courtesy of our pals at CJSW 90.9FM. Details will be released on May 20, so don’t try to sneak ahead.

The Community

We won’t be in the same room, but we still want the Lockdown to feel like a community event. In the past, mealtime was when our animators came together to share their progress, talk about their ideas, and keep everyone on track and energized. That’s why we’ve partnered with local non-profits Fresh Routes and Calgary Meals on Wheels to offer fresh groceries and healthy meals for Lockdown participants, so you can spend as much of your week as possible focused on animation. These meals are optional extras, but we’re encouraging everyone to join in, hang out on Zoom, and keep the community spirit alive.
