IAPR Recipient Announcement 2023: Daniel Volante

I hope that my work connects to those still figuring themselves out, especially fellow young people of colour, and inspires them to freely create and live authentically.

We are excited to announce our intake of our 2023/24 Intermediate Animator's Production Residency recipient: Daniel Volante!

About Daniel:

My name is Daniel Volante and I am a Filipino multi-disciplinary artist based in Calgary, with a current focus on experimental animation. Themes in my work include nostalgia, identity, and connection, and I greatly enjoy abstracting past life experiences as a tool to enrich and personalize my art. I am heavily inspired by magical realism and unconventional visual textures, as well as retro video games and the music, aesthetics, and storytelling that stem from them. I hope that my work connects to those still figuring themselves out, especially fellow young people of colour, and inspires them to freely create and live authentically. Other than animation I have experimented with music, theatre, poetry, printmaking, and mural art, and hope to one day revisit these fields and incorporate them into my current practice.

IAPR Film Synopsis:

The project for this residency/[working title] will be a two minute experimental short film that explores distinct events taking place at a teenage house party. Through abstraction and magical realism, the film will put to light the intense feelings of freedom, vulnerability, and intimacy teenagers experience in party settings.

Check out Daniel's instagram, and also make sure to come to our Lockdown+Member Screening on June 17th at cSpace, as Daniel took part in our Lockdown 2023 and made a film!
