IAPR Recipient Announcement 2024: Vanessa Webster and Christine Llamas
Using morphs and experimenting with tactile media, this film will illuminate the dark psychological space of finding who one really is
We are excited to announce our intake of our 2024/25 Intermediate Animator's Production Residency recipients: Vanessa Webster and Christine Llamas!
About Vanessa:
My name is Vanessa Webster! I am a Black Filipino artist based out of Calgary Alberta with a current focus on character animation. As a recent graduate of Alberta University of the Arts my work throughout my education has primarily leaned into themes of culture, identity and childhood. Despite these more compounded ideas, my style is very silly, with emphasis on simplicity, color and of course weirdness. I am heavily inspired by many of the cartoons I watched growing up and love to intertwine my work with the absurdity and fun of this medium. Outside of animation I also teach, go to the zoo and take long long naps.
About Christine:
My name is Christine Llamas and I am a Filipino animator based in Calgary and an AUArts alumni. As a first generation immigrant child, I reflect through my work, discussing themes of identity, childhood, and connection to my Filipino culture and hopefully connect to others who have similar experiences. My practice is inspired by the places I’ve explored, bringing playful and fantastical aspects into my art that contrast real life. Inspired by a lot of anime, manga, and fashion I hope to incorporate these interests into my work.
IAPR Film Synopsis:
Our film Roots is a four minute short story about three close friends learning to grapple with the fleeting connection to their culture. Using morphs and experimenting with tactile media, this film will illuminate the dark psychological space of finding who one really is.
