Becky James' Snake (2007)

Animation isn't about the quality of the drawing as much as the quality of the ideas, and Snake nails it on that front.

A almost crude but adorable drawing of a snake on a cliff with two leaf-less trees on either side. Drawn with pencil on regular printer paper. From Becky James' Snake (2007)

NOTE: This Monday short was originally posted on August 7, 2018. We are re-uploading Peter Hemminger's original Monday Shorts until further notice.

Becky James has a knack for blending the cute and the macabre, and while she definitely has films that are more polished than 2007's Snake, none of them are quite as... visceral. Snake is drawn about as simply as possible, like a notebook doodle brought to life. But the crude style doesn't take away from the story; it probably makes it more accessible, since the teeth-pulling in particular would've been a lot more squirm-inducing if it'd been rendered realistically. Besides, animation isn't about the quality of the drawing as much as the quality of the ideas, and Snake nails it on that front
