Sohfi Janz' GIRAF19 Promo Trailer

We couldn’t be more excited by the pure ambiance and rich emotional curiosity that exudes from the GIRAF19 promo bumper.

This year, Sohfi Janz was our promo animator and boy did she deliver! Sohfi Janz is a Calgary-based artist with a fascination for proceduralism and interactive media (She was our DS4Y resident last year!). She graduated from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2021 with a Bachelors of Design in Character Design with a minor in Animation. Self-taught in Blender and the Godot game engine, she is constantly epxerimenting and learning new ways of understanding and using digital technology to create artwork.

Her renders of 3D experimental procedural animation explore beautifully built up renders of giant structures, not unlike the Rocky Mountains, only to break them down again into primitive low polygonal forms, eventually revealing a thin wire frame skeleton. Her camera soars above the mountains reducing the image to topical maps and in reverse seemingly looks up at the forms through an impossible angle from within.

Sohfi’s promo has a short run time but it is a great precursor for the curiosity, wonder, and excitement that we hope our audience brings to GIRAF 19.
