Genvieve Dale & Dean Mang-Wooley's Le Jardin des Delices (2022)
A ton of whimsy and a dash of Renaissance to create a three act visual spectacle from fruit decorating Paradise to Kimchi being the background of Hell
With our next Animation Lockdown just around the corner, we released all of the Animation Lockdown films from the 2022: Impossible Shapes Edition (watch them all here!). Looking back at all of these magnificent films, I wanted to take a moment to give a special nod to Genvieve and Dean's work on Le Jardin des Delices (the garden of earthly delights).
Shot on our Oxberry Stand with multiplane panes of glass, Le Jardin des Delices really showcases the marvel of Gen's insane magazine collection with Dean's extensive animation experience. The three Act locations are each individual and detailed, but so dang fun to watch and laugh at. The comedy is reminiscent of Terry Gilliam with a ton of whimsy and a dash of Renaissance to create a three act visual spectacle from fruit decorating Paradise to Kimchi being the background of Hell.
There's always something to look at, and it's great to remember that you can make a film in 48 hours - knowing this film was made in one long weekend just humbles you, and the visual humour mixed with the poetic music choices just make it a fun time. And we're not the only ones to think so! Not only did it win Audience Choice at Impossible Shape's screening, but it went on to TIFF Lightbox where it won Best Sound, and just recently it won Best Experimental Film at the Edmonton short film fest. We hope to see Gen and Dean back in the Oxberry this May, and keep your eyes peeled for when we announce this year's Lockdown!
syn. A comedic, cinematic and overall wild ride that ends in the depths of Hell!
