JOB CALL: Contract Animator
YEGFilm is seeking an animator to partner on a mixed media short documentary about the infamous Calgary restaurant chain Goldstein and Chan's Wok and Bagel Emporium
Call for: Contract Animator
Animated Content: 2 to 3 minutes of animated interstitials and possible brief dialogue segments brought to life.
Working Title: Goldstein and Chan’s Disastravaganza
Project Description: YEGFilm, Edmonton’s premier community of emerging filmmakers is seeking an animator to partner on a mixed media short documentary about the infamous Calgary restaurant chain: Goldstein and Chan’s Wok and Bagel Emporium, and the significance of Jewish-Chinese cuisine in Jewish households and broader North American fusion cuisine. The story follows the rise and fall of the restaurant famously given the worst review ever in the Calgary Herald. Most segments will be live action and interviews. However some animation needed to string together the scenes and bring some mentioned concepts to life. Project has already received partial Calgary arts funding.
Visual Style: Matching the aesthetic of the era in which the restaurants existed (1980s/early 90s), aiming for a style that incorporates “Saturday morning cartoons” and camcorder-to-video tape recording.
Ideal Candidate: Emerging or mid-career animator, BIPOC or white, some experience with multiple animation styles or lots of experience with desired visual style identified above.
Timeline: Production to occur in Winter and Spring 2023, with anticipated completion in Spring or Summer 2023.
Wage: $5000 (including taxes)
