International Women's Day 2022

A girl with a distorted face holds up a pillbug as an offering

Once again, we're sharing the work of the incredibly talented women working in independent animation for International Women's Day, and once again, we're stuck between two options. We could overwhelm you with an absurdly long list of films to try to feel even halfway comprehensive, or make something manageable and feel like we're barely skimming the surface. There's an embarrassment of riches out there when it comes to the work of women in animation, which makes it easy to get overwhelmed.

This year, we're leaning towards the second of those options, re-sharing 23 films that we've spotlighted in our Monday Shorts blog series over the last 12 months. These are all films we love, and it feels nice to share some context along with the films themselves. If you're curious about any of them, we'd highly encourage you to read the blog post along with the film. If this doesn't seem like enough animation to tide you over, there is plenty more to see on our Indie Animation Mixtape on Vimeo—and hopefully we'll have a chance to write in more depth on at least a few of those in the next year. Looking back on what we've added in the last year, it's... there is a lot of brilliant stuff in there.

If you missed our past lists, you can still browse through our 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 entries. And as always, if we've misgendered any filmmakers, please send us a note and we'll correct it as soon as we can.

And without further ado, happy International Women's Day!
