CJM Scholarship 2023: Hartley Fiala

Adding more colour to the world one step at a time and watching life go by is what he does best.

We are excited to announce the recipient of our 2023 intake of the Chris J. Melnychuk Memorial Scholarship and Residency: Hartley Fiala! Hartley made a film for our Animation Lockdown 2023: Whiplash Edition, and won our "Dailies" Community Award, so we're more than chuffed to have him make a film with us with this opportunity!

About Hartley:

Hartley Fiala is an artist and animator based in Calgary. Adding more colour to the world one step at a time and watching life go by is what he does best.

CJM Project Summary:

With this project, I want to create an animation of how one's rejection of help from trauma worsens it, and I want to showcase my realization That accepting help makes your life better.

Visually, I will create this project using a 2D hand-drawn animation style. I hope to use Photoshop in "watercolour makers" and use 32 + 64-bit pixel animation. I want to mix pixel art with my "marker" style to render a hybrid of mediums that I believe to be unique visually
